Exquisitely sensitive accelerometers embedded permanently within the comb of a frame, are able to detect an ultra-short, very high intensity “jolting” pulse from a single varroa mite, even with the frame covered in honey bees. This booklet charts the discovery, elucidation and potential applications of this unique behaviour.
